Why celebrities and collectors are championing pre-loved luxury more than ever

There's no better way to solidify a trend's popularity than witnessing celebrities embrace it wholeheartedly. Whether it’s scouring from consignment stores, or flaunting vintage on red carpets, Hollywood stars are repeatedly gravitating towards pre-loved luxury to discover unique pieces that resonate with their personal style.

No one embraces pre-loved fashion quite like Sarah Jessica Parker

At the forefront of this trend is vintage expert and vintage enthusiast Sarah Jessica Parker. Known for her iconic role as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, the striking similarity between her on-screen persona and real-life interests lies in their enduring love for one-of-a-kind pieces and vintage discoveries. While Carrie indulged in a mix of luxury shopping, boasting a collection of Manolo Blahniks and Prada that few could rival, Sarah had her own unique approach, sourcing similar items exclusively from pre-loved stores. Nonetheless, both satisfied their deep passion for fashion.

A dedicated fan of pre-loved shopping, Parker's affinity for finding unique items existed long before she even met her on-screen character for Sex and City.

Fondly remembering an image from 1987 in a Vogue interview, she said, "Every single thing on me is from a vintage store. With the exception of whatever is in my hair."

In an interview with Glamour, the actress said, “I really love beautiful, well-made clothes. I don't shop [a lot], so I tend to have pieces for a long time. I like mixing vintage with newer designers.”

Vintage pieces like these can only be sourced from resellers or pre-loved marketplaces. Once out of circulation, getting them from retail stores is no longer an option- and so an authentic, reliable marketplace is your only option to find these one of pieces.

Jada Pinkett Smith

Just like Parker, Jada Pinkett Smith has been spotted often on vintage shopping excursions with her daughter Willow Smith. Her son, Jaden Smith also mentioned in an interview with GQ, that he believes that shopping vintage “is the future.”

Zoey Deschannel

The new girl actress spoke about her shopping tastes and preferences in an interview with Instyle. Deschannel said that she had shopped at thrift stores since she was a teen and had utilised her finding skills to find unique off pieces.

New, designer pieces often do not have the charm and character that a one-off vintage piece has, and the key to finding such items is to find the right marketplaces that are on-top of trends.

Hollywood seconds this trend

Lorde, Anne Hathaway, and other celebrities such as Eva Mendes have always been vocal about their love for shopping pre-loved, in comparison to run of the mill, fast-fashion pieces that offer nothing special. Lorde's style has always been extremely personalised and far from overconsumerism, making vintage shopping perfectly on-brand for her.

In Fact in an interview with Instyle she spoke about how she sported a vintage St. John’s suit that she bought from a preloved store, “I got this navy blue vintage suit with gold buttons. It fits me perfectly. I wear it onstage all the time. It's my favourite, and I didn't even need to get it tailored. It's my best find by far.”

Drew Barrymore, Julia Roberts, Nikki Reed, Janelle Monae—the list of Hollywood personalities who embrace vintage and pre-loved shopping is endless, and for good reason.

Bollywood impact

In recent times, Bollywood celebrities have also taken on this trend head first. Most leading actors also are tuning into sourcing and shopping pre-loved luxury fashion. This gives them the chance to flaunt a distinctive and individual piece that many may not be able to find.

Celebrities like Jacqueline Fernandez, Wamiqa Gabbi, Sanya Malhotra, Khushi Kapoor, and Shobhita Dhulipala are turning to pre-loved marketplaces like My Almari for their luxury needs, indicating a growing trend.

Our verdict

With celebrities endorsing this trend, Gen Z consumers are already motivated to shop, and the resale of pre-loved items will only draw more interest. Synonymous with sustainability and exclusivity, this niche market is now gaining global acceptance. If you're not convinced, take these celebrities as proof that there's no better way to experience luxury than through pre-loved shopping.
